Cherry
Balm Tattoo Aftercare
The following
is a list of the herbs used in Cherry Balm and their medicinal uses:
Tea Tree
Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia):
Antiseptic (prevents the growth of bacteria), Anti-fungal (prevents
the growth of fungus) It was centuries ago that Australian aborigines
probably first started plucking leaves from a native tree to treat skin
infections. In 1770, sailors from Captain Cook's expedition to the South
Seas ventured ashore at New South Wales and brewed a tea using the leaves
of the same tree. This event engendered the herb's English name "tea
tree". Australian soldiers participating in World War I were given
tea tree oil as a disinfectant, leading to a high demand for its production.
Because the Melaleuca alternifolia grows only in Australia, that country
is now the major source of tea tree oil, exporting some 700 tons of
annually. High-quality tea tree oil contains 40% or more of terpinen-4-ol,
the ingredient that fights harmful bacteria and fungi and makes the
oil so effective in preventing and fighting infection in cuts, scrapes,
insect bites, and stings. The oil kills fungus and bacteria, including
those resistant to some antibiotics. Specifically, tea tree oil may
help to treat cuts, scrapes, insect bites and stings, and other minor
skin wounds and irritations. Tea tree oil blends rapidly and easily
with the skin's own oils. In the process, the oil alters the chemical
barrier of the skin, making it less hospitable to the growth of fungi
and other organisms. In these ways, tea tree oil not only lessens the
chance of infection, it also promotes healing and reduces the likelihood
of scarring.
Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha): Antiseptic (prevents the
growth of bacteria) Myrrh has good antiseptic properties, reduces inflammation,
and treats skin problems. Hailed for it's disinfectant properties, myrrh
has historically been used for ailments as diverse as stomach pain,
indigestion, poor circulation, wound healing, and certain skin diseases.
And in biblical terms, it was chosen, along with frankincense and gold,
as a gift given by the Three Wise Men at the birth of Christ.
Plantain (Plantago major): Emollient (applied externally to soften and sooth),
antiseptic (prevents the growth of bacteria), astringent (increase the
tone and firmness of the tissue, and lessen mucus discharge from draining
sores) Plantain has soothing properties, and is good for itchy skin
problems. Plantain is known to have astringent, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory,
and wound healing properties, which make it effective for minor cuts,
scrapes, rashes, blisters and burns. It is also beneficial in reducing
swelling and relieving itching caused by bug bites and stings.
